CAT 6 Ethernet Network Cable Tutorial

August 24th, 2009 NetStandard Inc. No comments

Although it’s sometimes difficult to predict where technology is headed, one thing is certain: system loads will continue to increase. Applications are expected to do more, and the explosive growth of online video for business and pleasure demands a bigger pipeline.

CAT 6 is the standard designed to increase the pipeline. Although it’s not yet widely used, it will become more common in the future. You, or your IT staff, may have already encountered it in your business.

CAT 6 Ethernet Network Cable Tutorial

NetStandard is making the switch to CAT 6, and Jeffrey Brinkerhuff, a certified engineer at NetStandard’s Kansas City Data Center, has terminated plenty of CAT 6 cables lately. He has created a video tutorial that shows how CAT 6 cables can be made from scratch.

Although creating a CAT 6 cable is similar to a CAT 5/CAT 5e, there are some differences. The differences are significant enough to warrant creating a tutorial. In the video, Jeffrey demonstrates a few simple techniques that you can used to create a cable in just a few minutes.

The video, along with video information points and a wiring diagram, are available on netstandard.tv.

CAT 6 Advantages

Although CAT 6 is designed to handle capacities you may not yet be experiencing, it’s clear that system loads will only increase. CAT 6 provides performance of up to 250MHz and is suitable for Gigabit Ethernet applications. CAT 6 will also work for 10Gigabit Ethernet applications as long as you use shielded cable. (Although unshielded CAT 6 cable will work, you will encounter length limitations for 10Gigabit Ethernet.)

In addition to speed, the benefits of CAT 6 include lower crosstalk and signal noise. CAT 6 is also backward-compatible with CAT 3 and CAT 5/Cat 5e standards.  This allows you still run 10/100mb and traditional phone (analog) communications over the new style cable.
